Alpha Omega is a medical device company and a leading manufacturer of microelectrode recording equipment for neurosurgery and neuroscience research. Our solutions are used by world-renowned neurosurgeons and neuroscientists across the globe.

We are seeking an M.Sc. student to join our R&D team and support the development of implantable neuro-medical devices. This role focuses on materials, coatings, surface treatments, cleaning processes, and the interaction between brain tissue and electrodes. The position involves close collaboration with mechanical, biomedical, and hardware engineers.

Responsibilities:

  • Support material selection for implantable medical devices, with emphasis on long-term interaction with brain tissue
  • Study and analyze the interface and behavior between brain tissue and electrode materials, including:
    • Surface chemistry
    • Coatings and surface modifications
    • Acute and long-term tissue response
  • Evaluate polymers and elastomers used in implants (e.g., polyurethane, parylene-C, polyimide)
  • Analyze hydrophobic material behavior in brain tissue and propose mitigation approaches
  • Evaluate surface treatments and post-processing, including:
    • Passivation
    • Electropolishing
    • Plating and thin-film coatings
  • Support post–laser welding processes, including:
    • Heat-affected zone mitigation
    • Oxide and residue removal
    • Surface recovery and defect risk reduction
  • Identify and assess chemical and process-related risks, including:
    • Laser welding and laser cutting
    • Electropolishing and plating
    • Cleaning and surface preparation processes
  • Support development and evaluation of cleaning processes to remove chemical residues
  • Assist in defining material tests, cleanliness criteria, and validation plans
  • Document findings and provide clear, actionable technical recommendations to the R&D team

Requirements:

  • Current M.Sc. student in Materials Science / Materials Engineering
  • Basic knowledge of:
    • Metals, polymers, and coatings
    • Surface chemistry and material interfaces
  • Strong interest in implantable or biomedical materials
  • Ability to analyze literature, experimental data, and material behavior
  • Good technical documentation skills
